The town enjoys that classic combination of mountain scenery and sea views. Nestled at the foot of Slieve Foy, the vistas across the water are to the Mountains of Mourne, ‘sweeping down to the sea’. However, not only is it beautifully situated, Carlingford forms part of the north-south corridor of Belfast-Newry-Dundalk and Dublin, thus affording easy access to the commerical, educational, social and recreational amenities of these hubs.
Whilst located midway between two capitals, the town retains a traditional character and is one of Ireland’s heritage towns. King John’s Castle, a Norman edifice, dominates the harbour whilst the medieval street pattern still exists today and is chequered with historical buildings such as Taaffe’s Castle, a mint, a tholsel and a Dominican abbey.
